the word ‘Mai’ came from ‘Mayee’ which is widely used in Maharashtra, It is believed that Sourashtrians could have picked this word during their migration through maharashtra. The exact meaning of ‘Mai’ or ‘Mayee’ could be compared with ‘Matha’ in Hindi and ‘Thayee’ in Tamil a spritual way of calling i.e ‘Bolo Mayee’, ‘Bolo Matha’, ‘Sollu Thayee’. Even Shridi Sai baba used call all women by suffixing Mayee with names.

  35. jayashree says:

mai means mother. like how in Tamil girl children are addressed as “Vaamma, Pomma” for “come and go”, girl children’s sourashtra names are suffixed with “mai”. You can recall there is a function called “Nhuru Mai” when in laws give a feast to all when their daughter in law returns from delivery. “Nhuru” means the baby and “Mai” is mother. So the word “Mai” means literally “Mother”
